In some cases, this can irritate a nearby nerve root, causing pain and numbness in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/leg-pain\/\">leg<\/a>. A herniation can occur at different levels of the spine, but it is most common in the lumbar region (<a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/lower-back-pain\/\">lower back<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Different degrees of severity:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are different degrees of severity of herniation, ranging from disc bulging to sequestration, in which the nucleus separates from the disc. The latter, much rarer case may require surgery. The other, more common grades can be treated through rehabilitation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Localized pain in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/lower-back-pain\/\">lower back<\/a> or in one <a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/leg-pain\/\">leg<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation<\/li>\n<li>Pain worsened when sitting, bending forward, or coughing<\/li>\n<li>Weakness in the leg or foot (in some cases)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"saviez-vous\"><span class=\"saviez\">DID<br \/>\nYOU<br \/>\n<i>KNOW?<\/i><\/span>Many people live with disc bulges or herniations without any symptoms.<\/div>\n<h2>What can cause a herniated disc?<\/h2>\n<p>A herniated disc is not always related to an accident. It often results from the accumulation of microtraumas over time, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Repeated lifting of heavy loads with poor technique<\/li>\n<li>Frequent twisting movements<\/li>\n<li>Muscle weakness or imbalance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cervical herniated discs<\/h2>\n<p>Did you know? Herniated discs can also occur in the <a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/neck-pain\/\">cervical region (the neck)<\/a>. Common symptoms include pain located in the neck, shoulder blade, and\/or arm. Numbness and tingling may also be present. Just like lumbar herniated discs, cervical herniations are not necessarily painful.
