BPPV often causes falls. BPPV occurs when small crystals, called otoliths, detach and float in the fluid of the ear’s semicircular canals, which detect rotational head movements. These crystals cause the fluid to move abnormally fast, tricking the brain into thinking you are spinning rapidly. BPPV is more common among older adults but can happen at any age, especially after a fall or head trauma.

Ménière’s disease

Ménière’s disease symptoms involve recurrent vertigo episodes lasting several hours, sudden hearing loss, and/or tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears). Vestibular rehabilitation in physiotherapy is recommended to improve functional ability and safety.

What causes labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is caused by a bacterial or viral infection that leads to inflammation of the vestibular system in the inner ear.
