In some cases, it may even limit how wide you can open your mouth\u2014making it <strong>harder to yawn or eat<\/strong> certain foods like apples or sandwiches\u2014and\/or cause<strong> pain when chewing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Jaw disorders: Why treat the TMJ with Physiotherapy?<\/h2>\n<p>A physiotherapist with advanced training in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) care can <strong>assess and treat jaw disorders and related symptoms<\/strong>, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/sore-jaw\/\">Jaw pain<\/a> (bruxism, osteoarthritis, post-surgical pain, etc.)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Clicking or popping sounds or a grinding sensation in the joint<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Locking when opening or closing the mouth<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Muscle spasms or trigger points<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Fractures, dislocations, or sprains<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Poor dental occlusion<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/headaches\/\">Headaches<\/a><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/condition\/neck-pain\/\">Neck or facial pain<\/a> (teeth, eyes, etc.)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Ear symptoms (pain, blocked sensation, tinnitus, etc.)<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Numbness or tingling around the jaw<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The physiotherapist will assess your range of motion, muscle strength and tension, joint stability, posture, and lifestyle habits to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.<\/p>\n<h3>During orthodontic treatment or after surgery<\/h3>\n<p>TMJ care may also be required during orthodontic treatment or following maxillofacial surgery, as muscle tension, joint mobility, and muscle strength can be affected. The goal is always to maintain or improve quality of life by restoring everyday function, such as talking, chewing, yawning, or brushing teeth, and to relieve any pain that may be present.<\/p>\n<h2>How is the TMJ treated?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The physiotherapy assessment<\/strong> includes an analysis of your jaw and neck mobility, muscle strength and tension, joint stability, posture, and lifestyle habits.
