So, what\u2019s the deal with all this tape?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 24px;\"><span style=\"color: #494949;\">A short guide to taping<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Kinesiology tape, or athletic tape, comes in all sorts of shapes and eye-catching colours. It\u2019s increasingly popular with <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>athletes<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>patients<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> alike undergoing <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>physiotherapy<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> treatment. There are a multitude of ways to apply tape depending on the material used and the desired outcome. Here are a few definitions to help untangle the uses and benefits of taping.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Athletic taping<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">This conventional form of taping has been around the longest and is still widely used today. The <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>stiff<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>white<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> tape is made with a zinc oxide adhesive backing. It\u2019s often applied over a thin layer of non-adhesive foam, or \u201cpre-wrap,\u201d, to protect the skin underneath. An adherent spray is also commonly used to keep the taping in place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">The main purpose of regular athletic taping is to <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>support<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> the injured joint by <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>immobilizing<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> it, thereby <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">preventing<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">further damage<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. It can also be used to <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>prevent injury<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (although there is no clear scientific data to support this) and in other specific applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">The advantages are that this type of tape is often <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>readily available<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> in pharmacies and the technique has been <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>extensively studied<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. There are downsides, however: It\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>not water-resistant<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>not very durable<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (it\u2019s usually good for the first hour, but then loses much of its effectiveness afterwards). It can also be <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>time-consuming<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> to apply and requires knowledge of sometimes <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>complex application techniques<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Kinesiology or neuro-proprioceptive taping<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">This type of taping is increasingly popular. It uses <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>stretchy<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> adhesive tape that comes in <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>a wide variety of colours<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, is <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>water-resistant<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, and is backed with a heat-activated, acrylic adhesive applied in a wave-like pattern. Because it\u2019s so elastic, it can be shaped around the contours of the body, which can result in some delightfully intricate designs! Several companies offer this type of tape. Some have <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>specific characteristics<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, such as four-way stretch, or come in precut shapes for easy application (e.g., spiderweb). This type of taping has three main goals: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Improve body biomechanics through <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>muscle inhibition or facilitation<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Reduce pain<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> in the treated area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Reduce swelling<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> by increasing lymphatic drainage. This is a technique frequently used by our PhysioExtra therapists specialized in manual lymphatic drainage, in patients with musculoskeletal injuries, or following a surgical procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">The advantages of this kind of taping are <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>durability<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (it can be kept in place from three to five days), <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>water-resistance<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (you can shower or swim without it coming off), <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>versatility<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>rapid application<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>elasticity<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, which allows for a full range of motion. The downsides are that it must be handled carefully (the adhesive loses its stickiness if it\u2019s applied and then removed, so it\u2019s important not to touch the sticky side when applying it), it requires a <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">specific application<\/span> <span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">technique<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> for each treatment objective (which varies, depending on the amount of stretch applied to the tape), and there is a <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>lack of research<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> supporting the effectiveness of the treatment. It\u2019s also not as readily available as white athletic tape (it\u2019s not sold in pharmacies but you can get it from specialized sports stores).<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Therapeutic taping<\/span><\/h4>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">People are generally less familiar with therapeutic taping, but it\u2019s a technique well worth discovering. <\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Generally, the therapist will apply a first layer of breathable, hypoallergenic adhesive fabric (Hypafix<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;or Cover-Roll Stretch<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>), over which a <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>non-elastic<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>water-resistant<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> tape (Leukotape P<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>) is stretched tight, creating wrinkles on the skin. There are several reasons for using this type of taping:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Reduce tension<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> in soft tissue (such as muscles and ligaments) to provide relief;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Correct<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> poor posture;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Limit the mobility<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> of a joint in a specific direction for biomechanical correction or to avoid damaging movements;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>Realign<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>provide stability or support<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> to an unstable joint.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">The advantages of this kind of taping are <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>durability<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (it can be kept in place from three to five days), <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>water-resistance<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> (you can shower or swim without it coming off), <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>versatility<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, and its <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>simple<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>speedy<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> application method (which can be taught to patients for future self-taping). There are also many <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>scientific studies<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> that prove its effectiveness. There are a few downsides, however. It\u2019s not sold in pharmacies or in specialized stores, and how successful the treatment is actually <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>depends on the elasticity<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> of the patient\u2019s skin\u2014it\u2019s often not very effective in those with highly elastic skin\u2014as much as on the therapist\u2019s skill with the tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Recommendations<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">If you think taping might be able to help you, talk to your <\/span><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"><strong>physiotherapist<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, who will be able to determine if this treatment is the right one for you, and which technique would best address your health issues.
