Work and day-to-day responsibilities are increasingly encroaching on our personal lives, at the expense of exercise and recreational activities, which often fall by the wayside for lack of time. As a result, there\u2019s been a dramatic spike in the use of medications and supplements in recent years (to improve concentration at work or school, to boost energy levels, to relieve stress, to sleep better, etc.). <\/span><br \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">But is medication really the only solution to these problems? More and more studies are looking at alternative treatments, such as yoga, meditation or, in our case,<\/span> <strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">laughter as a therapeutic tool<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. Not only does laughter feel good, it\u2019s also a legitimate non-pharmacological treatment option for many ailments. And unlike many other therapies, laughter is universally available, free, and safe for everyone\u2014or almost (precautions need to be taken after surgery).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Stress reliever<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">There\u2019s no arguing that stress is essential to survival. For example, if you were trying to escape a hungry lion, a healthy dose of adrenaline would definitely boost your strength\u2014and your chances of survival! But let\u2019s agree that this type of situation doesn\u2019t come along every day. The fact remains that stress is a constant presence in our daily lives and can have long-term negative effects on our body. Laughter is an interesting alternative because it <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">decreases levels of cortisol<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, the stress hormone,<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\"> in the blood<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Positive effect on depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Depression is partially caused by an imbalance of hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain. Laughter triggers an increase in the <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">secretion of mood-regulating hormones<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, such as <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">serotonin <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">and <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">endorphins<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, creating a feeling of wellbeing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Improved immune system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Laughter increases the body\u2019s <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">production of white blood cells <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">(leukocytes), key players in your immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Effects on the cardiovascular system<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">In combination with exercise, laughter can increase the amount of blood pumped by the heart. It can also help to dilate the blood vessels, thereby lowering blood pressure. In the long term, laughter may reduce arrhythmias and even help to prevent heart attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Exercise and muscle relaxation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Laughter involves several muscle groups, including the <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">abdominals<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\"> and the <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">respiratory muscles<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. The rhythmic muscle contractions produced by a good belly laugh create a relaxing effect comparable to that experienced after moderate <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">exercise<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Effects on breathing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Laughter goes hand-in-hand with <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">deep breaths<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">, which help to increase <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">gas exchanges<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. Watching funny movies has even been shown to reduce bronchial hyperreactivity in severe asthmatics.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #494949;\">Pain management<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">Studies have shown that laughter increases a person\u2019s <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">pain threshold<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. Dentists might consider cracking a few jokes while you\u2019re sitting in their chair, although you definitely wouldn\u2019t want to burst out laughing at the wrong time!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">In conclusion, laughter may not be the cure for all that ails us, but it\u2019s much less invasive than surgery and has far fewer side effects than medication. That said, don\u2019t stop taking your medication! But all the same, laughter can definitely be used as an add-on therapy for many problems, both <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">mental <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">and <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #00aef3;\">physical<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">. And if hearing about all its benefits only makes you giggle more, so much the better!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #50636d;\">There are even laughing clubs in Quebec that recommend exercises to get you chuckling.
