When they hold the required certification, they can issue an X-ray referral without needing a physician\u2019s approval, helping reduce wait times and streamline patient care.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"910\">Which physiotherapists can prescribe X-rays?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"993\">Not all physiotherapists are authorized to prescribe X-rays. To do so, they must:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1263\">\n<li data-start=\"995\" data-end=\"1115\">\n<p data-start=\"997\" data-end=\"1115\">Complete a mandatory training program recognized by the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/oppq.qc.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1114\">Ordre professionnel de la physioth\u00e9rapie du Qu\u00e9bec (OPPQ)<\/strong><\/a>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1116\" data-end=\"1169\">\n<p data-start=\"1118\" data-end=\"1169\">Obtain an <strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1154\">official certification<\/strong> from the OPPQ;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1170\" data-end=\"1263\">\n<p data-start=\"1172\" data-end=\"1263\">Maintain their credentials by completing <strong data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1262\">refresher training at least every three years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"1270\" data-end=\"1316\">When can physiotherapists prescribe X-rays?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1318\" data-end=\"1396\">Physiotherapists can prescribe X-rays only under <strong data-start=\"1367\" data-end=\"1395\">very specific conditions<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1658\">\n<li data-start=\"1398\" data-end=\"1491\">\n<p data-start=\"1400\" data-end=\"1491\">The injury must be a <strong data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1460\">traumatic musculoskeletal condition<\/strong> (e.g., a fall, a direct blow);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1492\" data-end=\"1564\">\n<p data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1564\">The injury must be <strong data-start=\"1513\" data-end=\"1523\">recent<\/strong>, occurring <strong data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1563\">within the past 72 hours<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1658\">\n<p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1658\">The physiotherapist must be the <strong data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1642\">first healthcare professional consulted<\/strong> for the injury.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1830\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1830\"><strong data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1674\">Note:<\/strong> If a physician has already assessed the injury and decided not to order an X-ray, the physiotherapist cannot prescribe one, even if they hold certification.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"1879\">How does the prescription process work?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1881\" data-end=\"2008\">Before issuing an X-ray referral, the physiotherapist must conduct a <strong data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1973\">thorough evaluation<\/strong> of your condition, which includes:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2148\">\n<li data-start=\"2010\" data-end=\"2067\">\n<p data-start=\"2012\" data-end=\"2067\">The standard clinical assessment used in physiotherapy;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2068\" data-end=\"2148\">\n<p data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2148\">Guidelines from the <strong data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2129\"><a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American College of Radiology (ACR<\/a><span style=\"color: #00a5e7;\">)<\/span><\/strong> regarding imaging.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2150\" data-end=\"2330\">In some cases, this evaluation may be done through <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/en\/telerehabilitation\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2223\">telerehabilitation<\/strong><\/a> (video consultation). However, a proper visual assessment must be possible in order to meet ACR standards.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2337\" data-end=\"2366\">Are there additional fees?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2528\">No. The evaluation for an X-ray referral is billed <strong data-start=\"2419\" data-end=\"2470\">the same as a standard physiotherapy assessment<\/strong>. There are <strong data-start=\"2482\" data-end=\"2502\">no extra charges<\/strong> for writing the referral.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2530\" data-end=\"2658\">Since <strong data-start=\"2536\" data-end=\"2549\">July 2022<\/strong>, X-rays prescribed by a physiotherapist are <strong data-start=\"2594\" data-end=\"2617\">covered by the RAMQ<\/strong>, just like those prescribed by a doctor.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2665\" data-end=\"2697\">Where can I go for the X-ray?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2699\" data-end=\"2865\">Your physiotherapist\u2019s referral is <strong data-start=\"2734\" data-end=\"2774\">valid at all medical imaging centers<\/strong> across Quebec. You may choose the facility that suits you best, whether public or private.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2699\" data-end=\"2865\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal;\">Note:<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> Some <\/span><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\" data-start=\"2887\" data-end=\"2914\">private imaging clinics<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> may charge additional fees. We recommend checking in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3043\">A collaborative approach: physiotherapists and physicians<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3045\" data-end=\"3109\">Although physiotherapists can prescribe X-rays, they <strong data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3108\">cannot<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3267\">\n<li data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3147\">\n<p data-start=\"3113\" data-end=\"3147\">Perform the X-ray exam themselves;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3148\" data-end=\"3177\">\n<p data-start=\"3150\" data-end=\"3177\">Interpret the X-ray images;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3178\" data-end=\"3229\">\n<p data-start=\"3180\" data-end=\"3229\">Make a <strong data-start=\"3187\" data-end=\"3208\">medical diagnosis<\/strong> based on the images;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3230\" data-end=\"3267\">\n<p data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3267\">Prescribe additional imaging tests.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3269\" data-end=\"3404\">This is why a <strong data-start=\"3283\" data-end=\"3313\">collaborative care pathway<\/strong> is essential. The physiotherapist will ensure appropriate medical follow-up by contacting:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3538\">\n<li data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3444\">\n<p data-start=\"3408\" data-end=\"3444\">Your family doctor, if you have one;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3445\" data-end=\"3498\">\n<p data-start=\"3447\" data-end=\"3498\">A physician involved in a <strong data-start=\"3473\" data-end=\"3497\">tripartite agreement<\/strong>;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3499\" data-end=\"3538\">\n<p data-start=\"3501\" data-end=\"3538\">An emergency physician, if necessary.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3545\" data-end=\"3577\">What happens after the X-ray?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3579\" data-end=\"3610\">Once the results are available:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3612\" data-end=\"3987\">\n<li data-start=\"3612\" data-end=\"3693\">\n<p data-start=\"3614\" data-end=\"3693\">Both your <strong data-start=\"3624\" data-end=\"3659\">physiotherapist and your doctor<\/strong> (if applicable) will be informed;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3694\" data-end=\"3886\">\n<p data-start=\"3696\" data-end=\"3886\">If a <strong data-start=\"3701\" data-end=\"3725\">fracture is detected<\/strong>, your doctor will take over treatment. If you don\u2019t have a doctor, your physiotherapist will assist you in <strong data-start=\"3833\" data-end=\"3856\">finding a physician<\/strong> for timely medical follow-up;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3887\" data-end=\"3987\">\n<p data-start=\"3889\" data-end=\"3987\">If the result is <strong data-start=\"3906\" data-end=\"3918\">negative<\/strong>, the physiotherapist can <strong data-start=\"3944\" data-end=\"3976\">continue your rehabilitation<\/strong> as needed.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3994\" data-end=\"4027\">Faster care, at the right time<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4029\" data-end=\"4311\">This new competency allows physiotherapists to act <strong data-start=\"4080\" data-end=\"4138\">more quickly in cases of recent musculoskeletal trauma<\/strong>.
