There\u2019s something hypnotic about staying in my bubble, watching my watts climb like the stock market on a euphoric day, and chaining hours together without interruption\u2026 without ever risking a car door or a distracted driver.<\/p>\n<p>My record? 6 hours non-stop. If you\u2019re preparing for a bike race or a triathlon, can you completely replace outdoor rides with trainer sessions?<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to test it on myself: for my Ironman Ottawa, I did 90% of my rides indoors, despite my coach\u2019s advice.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13669\" src=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175.jpg\" alt=\"Ming crossing the Ironman Ottawa finish line\" width=\"300\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175.jpg 1707w, https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175-108x150.jpg 108w, https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175-768x1064.jpg 768w, https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175-1109x1536.jpg 1109w, https:\/\/physioextra.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/1000005974-scaled-e1762458630175-1479x2048.jpg 1479w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption><em>Ming crossing the finish line of his first Ironman<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The advantages of indoor cycling<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Power control:<\/strong> nothing beats the trainer for precisely hitting your target zones and measuring progress.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total efficiency:<\/strong> no red lights and no descents\u2014just steady, well-dosed suffering.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete control:<\/strong> temperature, cadence, gradient, power\u2026 everything is dialed, and the mental load drops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Safety:<\/strong> no cars, no ice, no potholes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Express setup:<\/strong> in 5 minutes, you\u2019re ready to ride. A real joy when your schedule is packed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Data, data, data:<\/strong> for Strava nerds, it\u2019s paradise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can even watch your favorite show at the same time!<\/p>\n<p>And of course, consistency: rain, snow, or wind\u2014your training plan doesn\u2019t change\u2014always on the same Watopia Flat Route.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But\u2026 there\u2019s a catch.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Studies show that perceived effort is higher indoors: less ventilation, more heat, more perceived fatigue. The trainer builds discipline, but it heats up your head\u2026 literally.<\/p>\n<h2>What the trainer didn\u2019t teach me<\/h2>\n<h2>1. Wind and the aero position<\/h2>\n<p>No matter how good your fan is, it will never replace real wind. Indoors, watts are everything. Outdoors, your aerodynamic position on the bike has a non-trivial impact that grows with wind, and it stimulates your body in a unique way.<\/p>\n<p>Story time: at my Ironman Ottawa, after 80 km, my eyes were as dry as a desert\u2014not used to the wind! Even your eyelid muscles need training.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Cornering and surges<\/h2>\n<p>On the trainer, everything is linear. Outside, every corner, every brake, every hill engages your coordination and stabilizers. On the trainer, you turn watts. Outside, you ride a bike.<\/p>\n<h2>3. The mental and the social<\/h2>\n<p>Riding outside means facing the elements, but also feeding your head and your heart. It\u2019s motivating, stimulating\u2026 and social!
